Educational Benefits for Veterans

Welcome Veterans, Current Military, and Dependents

Adams State University is appreciative of your service to our country and is honored to assist you with your educational benefits. The VA School Certifying Official (SCO) is located in the Veterans Center. The SCO forwards enrollment certifications to regional offices of the Veterans Administration, provides assistance to students with problems that relate to the Veterans Administration educational programs, and maintains a reference file on all VA students for up to 5 years.

NOTE: The certifying official is not a VA employee, and can’t make decisions about your eligibility for VA benefits.

Veterans & Dependent path to in-state tuition

Adams State has adopted a policy to grant in-state tuition status to any Active Duty, Reserve National Guard, Honorably Discharged member of the Armed Forces of the United States, or dependent of an Honorably Discharged member of the Armed Forces of the United States who meets the presumptions and rules for maintaining a domicile in Colorado described in sections 23-7-103. The individual must apply for in-state tuition status, and they must bring with them evidence of residency. The application can be found in the Veteran’s Information Packet along with a list of examples for what qualifies as proof of residency. It is important to note, that the residency designation is for tuition purposes only. However, when a student is granted this classification, they will also become eligible for a stipend from the College Opportunity Fund (COF).

Yellow Ribbon

Adams State University is a Yellow Ribbon School. The Yellow Ribbon Program is an agreement between Adams State University and the VA to cover the additional tuition costs for students who will be paying out-of-state tuition. This program is for veterans using Chapter 33, and Fry Scholarship recipients only. This benefit cannot be used by spouses. This we have a limited number of students that can qualify for this program, and is administered on a first-come first serve basis.

Personalized Cost Analyses Sheet

Upon request to the Veteran’s Coordinator, we can generate a personalized cost analysis sheet for the student. This sheet will break down the costs for attending Adams State, and it will show what your education benefit will pay for. When you make your request, please include the following information: if you are staying in on-campus housing, are you using a meal plan, if you are a graduate student or an undergraduate, and which education benefit you are using.

Military Tuition Assistance

  • Contact your education service officer for your unit for Tuition Assistance information.
  • Top Up Program
  • If your Tuition Assistance is not enough to cover the cost of tuition, use a VA education benefit, Chapter 30, or Chapter 33 to cover the remaining cost of tuition.

Requirements for VA students

We do require all VA students to complete our Intake Form and our Statement of Understanding before we will certify their enrollment to the VA. These forms can be found in the Veteran’s Information Packet. We also require the student to send us a copy of their Certificate of Eligibility from the VA.

Adams State University does not automatically register students for classes, nor do we automatically certify their enrollment to the VA. It is the student’s responsibility to work with their academic advisors and register for classes that meet the requirements of their degree plan. It is also the student’s responsibility to request their enrollment be certified to the VA each semester. Students that do not request certification will not have their enrollment certified to the VA.

Students using VA education benefits are also required to contact our office of Student Business Services and sign a Promissory Note prior to the census date each semester. This allows the student setup any payment plans they may need.
